Mysterious Marfa Lights – Ghost Lights – Paranormal – UFO – Swamp Gas? Will anyone ever learn what causes the Marfa Lights? They have been observed just outside Marfa, Texas for well over a 100 years near the mountains. Some say the lights are caused by swamp gas, some claim vehicle headlights while others claim extra terrestrials or ghost of Native Americans wandering about at night with lanterns. The lights were seen before electricity and vehicles so it would stand to reason that the lights aren’t caused by those two suggestions. In fact the lights have been seen by so many people and so often that the State of Texas build a viewing platform with restroom facilities for viewers. For years there has been a spot on  SH 67 where people pull over and wait for the lights to appear in the distance. It was a small area off the highway with a trash can.

The history of the Marfa lights on Wikipedia states, “The first published account of the lights appeared in the July 1957 issue of Coronet Magazine, the sole source for anecdotal claims that the lights date back to the 19th century. Reports often describe brightly glowing basketball-sized spheres floating above the ground, or sometimes high in the air. Colors are usually described as white, yellow, orange or red, but green and blue are sometimes reported. The balls are said to hover at about shoulder height, or to move laterally at low speeds, or sometimes, to shoot around rapidly in any direction. They often appear in pairs or groups, according to reports, to divide into pairs or to merge, to disappear and reappear, and sometimes to move in seemingly regular patterns. Their sizes are typically said to resemble soccer balls or basketballs. Sightings are reported occasionally and unpredictably, perhaps 10 to 20 times a year. There are no reliable reports of daytime sightings. According to the people who claim to have seen the lights, they may appear at any time of night, typically south of U.S. Route 90 and east of U.S. Route 67, five to fifteen miles southeast of Marfa, at unpredictable directions and apparent distances. They can persist from a fraction of a second to several hours. There is evidently no connection between appearances of the Marfa lights and anything else besides nighttime hours. They appear in all seasons of the year and in any weather, seemingly uninfluenced by such factors. They sometimes have been observed during late dusk and early dawn, when the landscape is dimly illuminated. They are said to be viewable year round. It is extremely difficult to approach an ongoing display of the Marfa lights, mainly due to the dangerous terrain of Mitchell Flat. Also, all of the land where the Marfa lights are observed is private property, and access is prohibited without explicit permission from the owners. he state notes the lights in travel maps, the city has erected a viewing platform, and the Marfa Chamber of Commerce promotes the peculiar lights. The weekend-long Marfa Lights Festival is held annually in the city’s downtown.”

There is an interesting video on the Marfa Lights  by Pecos45 that was done several years ago. It has interviews with residents from Marfa and shows the lights. The lights have had many skeptics and even the US government make attempts at either disproving them or learning what causes them to appear. The lights can be seen nearly every night. This author has seen the lights a couple dozen times over many years. Only to be disappointed twice by a no show of the lights. Years past the lights were easily seen and traffic was slow to non existent on the highway at night. This has changed quite a bit through the passing years. There were times when this author and a friend were the only people sitting off the side of the highway in the very dark night. That can become rather nerve wracking as minds wander while waiting to see lights. A few times there were unsavory characters that were more threatening than the lights. The new viewing station gives the area a feeling of safety and a place to sit and relax. There are lights on the building, but they are red to help one maintain their night vision. Now the highway is busy day and night with large trucks running the pipeline highway from Mexico into the U.S. with goods to deliver.

It’s difficult to explain the feeling when observing the lights other than a great sense of wonderment. This comes from having no idea what creates the lights. Listening to other watchers inhale as lights are seen that appear to be headed straight toward them and then the exhale as they stop before coming too close. The light appear as one, many or as individual lights that split into more lights. The bounce, wiggle, move up and down. They go back and come forward and at times appear to pulsate and emanate different colors. This author spoke to a local resident who has come to view the lights throughout most of his life. He can’t figure them out. He told of an experiment he and several friends tried after receiving permission to go onto the private property that lies between the viewing station and the mountains. He said that a group of his friends stayed by the platform while another group headed onto the property in a vehicle. Both sets were armed with walkie talkies to communicate. While the group near the platform observed lights the other group tried to drive toward the lights, That group would lose sight of the lights almost immediately and were never able to get close to them. Each time they lost sight of the lights the group by the platform would has constant vision of the lights. He said when they were younger they camped on the desert floor and tried to walk toward the lights without success.

A search on the Internet will bring up many links to information about the lights. Some lead to the  UFO version while others lead to the end of the world. Native Americans lived all over this region of Texas hundreds of years ago and there are ghostly tales of warriors and chiefs wandering at night with torches looking for something.

Have there been paranormal investigations done in this area? What would the investigators do? There is an article, Part 2 Where Paranormal Investigators and Ghost Hunters Tred that may shed light on how what is done. If anyone reading this article knows of any investigations into the Marfa Lights by a paranormal group, the author would like to know.

Could they by ghost lights? These are described as a natural phenomenon producing a ghostly light sometimes seen at night or twilight over bogs, swamps, and marshes. The main problem with those who believe they are ghost lights is that this area is desert and not damp and humid.

One thing the lights are most likely not would be Orbs!

East Texas Paranormal Founder Martha Decker likes talking on the radio about investigation techniques

East Texas Paranormal Founder Martha Decker likes talking on the radio about investigation technique. She applies a lot of the techniques she learned while in law enforcement. Decker retired from policing in 2007 and formed East Texas Paranormal (ETP) and hasn’t look back, well maybe not too often. Since then she has appeared on numerous paranormal radio shows as a guest speaker. While they talk about a variety of subjects the interviews always seem to turn toward her law enforcement experience and how she applies her knowledge to the paranormal. In fact, a majority of this group are current or former law enforcement officers. Decker talks about how many of the techniques used for police investigations and interviews work well when applied to the paranormal. She is working on a couple of books. The one that will be completed first is about police techniques and the paranormal. Decker began conducting paranormal investigations in 1999 after going to the Myrtles Plantation with fellow ETP member and longtime friend Tamra Brickey.

Here are the archive links for some of the radio shows she has been on – If you have the time, you just might like to listen in…..

I wonder, is this what everyone does when they visit the USS Lexington? That is, in addition to EVP sessions and shooting video with hope of capturing someone who may still be hanging out and performing their duties.

Leave your comments as let us know what you did when you visited the USS Lexington…..

Paranormal? Earling Possession – Anna Ecklund – Last Sanctioned Exorcism – Begone Satan

Paranormal? Earling Possession – Anna Ecklund – Last Sanctioned Exorcism – Begone Satan. This is possibly one of the most publicized possessions during the twentieth century. It was written about in Begone Satan by German author Reverend Carl Vogl There is a plethora of information one can find on the Internet about this event. Rosemary Ellen Guiley wrote about the case in the book, “The Encyclopedia of Demons & Demonology.” She states the Earling Possession occurred in 1928 with the possession of Anna Ecklund  that multiple entities were within one victim. The exorcisms in Earling, Iowa totaled 23 days and included three sessions. It’s a fascinating account of an event that is not a fairytale and one that would be good to  cover for new paranormal investigators. While it’s extremely rare, this does occur and is serious and should not be taken lightly.

Ecklund was born in the Midwest section of the U.S. in 1882.   She was raised as a Catholic and was devout in her faith. According to Guiley’s book, Ecklund started showing symptoms of possession such as a revulsion to  to holy objects, the inability to enter church and disturbing thoughts about sexual acts and becoming totally possessed by at 14 years of age in 1908. She traveled and went to visit her Aunt Mina, who was a reputed witch, according to Reverend Carl Vogl and mentioned in his book, “BeGone Satan!”  The books states her aunt caused her possession by placing spells on herbs used in her food. The book states that Father Theophilus Riesinger, a Capuchin monk from St Anthony in Marathon Wisconsin completed a successful exorcism on Ecklund in 1912 but she became possessed again after her father heaped curses on her, wishing her to be possessed. Father Theophilus Riesinger once again tried to exorcize Ecklund in 1928.

This is a quote from the forward of the  book,

“Letter from a doctor

Dr. John Dundon, Physician and Surgeon
1228 E. Brady St., Milwaukee, Wis

Rev. Celestine Kapsner, O.S.B.
St. John’s Abbey
Collegeville, Minn.

Dear Father Kapsner:

We wish to endorse your pamphlet “Vade Satana”; as a potent aid to faith in the value of sacramentals, relics of the saints, and prayer. No more vivid picture has been presented to us of the losing battle against the “camp of Christ.” Nothing has made our insistent floundering from the “camp of Christ” to the “camp of the devil” appear so absurd. The memory it has instilled of the hatred of Satan and the eternal misery of his permanent army, evokes a continuous inventory of one’s life, savoring of the minuteness of the final judgment. That it will save many souls we have no doubt. That some will borrow fruitless fright is also possible, but for them one must say that if the picture is terrible the real thing must be worse. Agony is the lot of all at least once.

Satan has seemed too unreal. It would be a pity if this pamphlet were to be suppressed because some weak souls have been made to sense him more vividly than the author intends. We were granted an interview with the exorcist, Father Theophilus, after reading your account of the diabolical possession. We treasure the experience as an intimate glimpse into the life of a pious priest very gifted in a specialty which should command the patronage of the medical profession, rather than to be allotted to the realm of superstition or necromancy. We anxiously await his complete report of the Earling

Yours very truly,

J. D. Dundon, M.D.”

Father Gary Thomas from California, who the movie, “The Rite” was about speaks to a local news station about real life exorcisms. This can give you some current information about priests of today and that they do perform exorcisms on real people.

Guiley continues in her  book that “The ancient ritual began in earnest the next morning. Father Theophilus had several of the strongest nuns hold Anna on a mattress laid upon an iron bed, and her clothes were bound tightly around her to prevent her from stripping herself. With Father Theophilus’ first exhortations Anna’s mouth clamped shut and she fell unconscious, followed almost immediately by an extraordinary fear of levitation. Rising swiftly from the bed, she hung onto the wall above the door like a cat, and it took great effort to pull her down.” Father Theophilus had hoped to keep the exorcism a secret but the noises coming from a convent of Franciscan sisters in Earling told a tale that brought out many citizens. Father Steiger had agreed to help by opening his parish for the exorcism. During the exorcisms, Ecklund vomited and spit, her face distorted and head swelled, eyes bulged and her stomach grew so large and she became so heavy that the iron bed nearly broke. During this time she only swallowed small amounts of water and milk, eating no food. She was near death at times. She understood language she did not know, reacted to holy objects and was able to expose secret sins of those present. Father Steiger was harassed for allowing this to happen in his parish and was later involved in an auto accident that the devils predicted during the exorcism.

Ecklund was possessed by many other lesser devils and spirits. However, her principal tormentors were Beelzebub, according to Guiley’s book. Beelzebub eventually acknowledged that the curses of Ecklund’s father, Jacob, began her possession when she was 14 years old. While many things occurred during the long days and nights of the exorcisms, Father Theophilus prevailed and then on the morning of Dec. 23, 1928 the possession was over and Ecklund was no longer possessed.

Other accounts report the individual’s name as being Emma Schmidt. According to some of these reports there is an acknowledgement of the exorcism in Earling Iowa found in Papal records and that it did occur at the location reported.

A supplement at the end of “Begone Satan” is the testimony of a witness present during most of the exorcism and it is,

“Testimony of Theresa Wegerer, Father Steiger’s housekeeper

“I was a witness to almost the whole period of the exorcism of the Earling possession case and I can truthfully say, that the facts mentioned in Begone Satan are correct. Some of the scenes were even more frightful than described in the booklet. There is not the slightest doubt in my mind, that the devils were present and I will never forget the horrible scenes, vile, filthy, and dirty, as long as I live. All the nuns asked for a change and were transferred the next year.

“The woman came back to Earling over a distance of a thousand miles four months after the exorcism to make a novena of Thanksgiving. This was at the bidding of Christ Himself. During her stay she boarded with the Schimorowsky family. She told me how our Blessed Lord appears to her frequently and encourages her to be faithful.”

This seemed a fitting article with the recent release of the movie “The Devil Inside.” There is much more that could be written about this even or researched. .

How do we know what is a GHOST? Are they Paranormal?

By Martha Hazzard-Decker

How do we know what is a ghost? Are they paranormal? This is a question that has most likely been asked for hundreds if not thousands of years. There are many different beliefs that can be found in a myriad of cultures. Some cultures view ghosts as a bad thing while others embrace ghosts. Many books have been written about ghosts from quite a few different viewpoints.

This discussion may last as long as humans can communicate or maybe one day the discussion will be settled with a definitive answer. There are vast numbers of individuals seeking such answers through research even though some individuals believe they already know the answer. For many the answers come from their culture or faith and believe as they do because this is what they were taught. Some thoughts have been that ghosts are not really ghosts but beings in another dimension and possibly a worm hole of sorts briefly opened and those beings or a look into that dimension becomes possible. Some may even think ghosts are not ghosts but beings from outer space. Then there are those too afraid to even discuss the thought of ghosts because their faith has taught them that all ghost are evil, occult and of the devil.

East Texas Paranormal (ETP) once had a case they shared with another group due to distance. This was a good case of paranormal unity between groups that led to help for a family who had never thought of the possibility of dealing with the unknown. Their entire family is Church of Christ and Sally (name of the client was changed to protect her and her family) called in frantic need of help not knowing what to do because what she claimed was happening to her family was shaking their belief system to its core. Some of the family members were so stringent in their beliefs that they think Catholics are still going to hell. Sally was advised she was talking to someone of the Catholic faith and that was fine by her, but she would not tell her family. Her claim was that something was attacking her young son and following him everywhere. She said doors would open and close for him as he entered and left a room. She said furniture would be moved around in him room and even in an entire house. He, we’ll call him Jason, went to stay with other family members during this time and Sally said it followed him there and now other family members were involved and witnessing strange events. Sally called and wanted immediate relief over the phone and to know what was happening. She learned that it doesn’t happen that way and someone could come to her home to help. Another group was contacted to help and help they did. Things quieted down around the households after several visits from the paranormal group. What was there? ETP and the other group are not sure, neither is Sally. Did it shake her families’ beliefs? You bet it did. They are still strong in their faith but was it a ghost? That is still unknown. Are there unexplained events occurring in the house? Yes they are and both groups are still in contact with Sally and will remain that way as long as needed. Unexplained events are ignored most of the time and no one in the family seeks counsel with whatever is there. You can read What to do if your house is haunted for additional information.

Now, back to the main topic of what is a ghost. A search on Google will give you 457,000,000 results you can go through and read from now until the day you die. Many are fascinating while others seem just plain crazy. The difficult task would be learning to discern what is legitimate and what is not.

According to one entry in Wikipedia a ghost is described as, “In traditional belief and fiction, a ghost is the soul or spirit of a deceased person or animal that can appear, in visible form or other manifestation, to the living. Descriptions of the apparition of ghosts vary widely from an invisible presence to translucent or barely visible wispy shapes, to realistic, life-like visions. The deliberate attempt to contact the spirit of a deceased person is known as necromancy, or in spiritism as a séance. The belief in manifestations of the spirits of the dead is widespread, dating back to animism or ancestor worship in pre-literate cultures. Certain religious practices—funeral rites, exorcisms, and some practices of spiritualism and ritual magic—are specifically designed to appease the spirits of the dead. Ghosts are generally described as solitary essences that haunt particular locations, objects, or people they were associated with in life, though stories of the phantom armies, ghost trains, phantom ships, and even ghost animals have also been recounted.”

Merrian-Webster describes ghost as, “: the seat of life or intelligence : soul <give up the ghost>

2: a disembodied soul; especially : the soul of a dead person believed to be an inhabitant of the unseen world or to appear to the living in bodily likeness

3: spirit, demon

4a : a faint shadowy trace <a ghost of a smile> b : the least bit <not a ghost of a chance>

5: a false image in a photographic negative or on a television screen caused especially by reflection

6: one who ghostwrites

7: a red blood cell that has lost its hemoglobin

ghost·like adjective

— ghosty adjective

About.com has a description under Paranormal Phenomena that describes a ghost as, “A ghost – or spirit or apparition – is the energy, soul or personality of a person who has died and has somehow gotten stuck between this plane of existence and the next. Most researchers believe that these spirits do not know they are dead. Very often they have died under traumatic, unusual or highly emotional circumstances. Ghosts can be perceived by the living in a number of ways: through sight (apparitions), sound (voices), smell (fragrances and odors), touch – and sometimes they can just be sensed.”

Ghosts of Earth partially describe them as, “Ghosts are generally thought of as the apparition ( the appearance of) or spirit of someone or some thing that is no longer living. Many theorize that a ghost is simply caught between the world of the living and the afterlife. Possibly confused about their own death. This is why many people believe that ghosts are often found in places of terrible tragedy and sudden death.”

Jason Sullivan explains What is a ghost on YouTube in a nine minute video. This is another place to observe many explanations of ghosts.  So are you still confused as to what is a ghost? Aren’t most of us!

Is there something about the paranormal you would like to see in an article? Whether it is something from within the paranormal community or of the unexplained it could be viable as an article. Contact the author with your idea and it may be the next topic of discussion.
